WinWAP for Pocket PC 1.3 - User Guide and FAQ

Screenshots - More Details

Where to use

The WinWAP browser is suitable to be used for both business and fun. In the business world it can be used to have access to the mobile services from your Pocket PC in addition to having access from your mobile phone. As Pocket PC's have a larger screen and easier user interface it is very convenient to use the WAP services on the Pocket PC instead of on the phone. If you have Bluetooth connectivity in both your phone and Pocket PC, you can very comfortably use WAP on your Pocket PC's larger screen without any wires or having to align the IR port. If you are looking for fun, the WinWAP browser provides access to all the same services (chat, information, google etc.) that you use on your mobile phone. Some telecom operators require that you are using a GPRS/3G connection and set WinWAP to use their WAP Gateway in order to get access to the telecom operator specific services.

Downloading and Installing WinWAP

Download the file from this website onto the PC you synchronize your device with. Then run the downloaded file and follow the instructions to set it up on your Pocket PC. After you have finished the installation process on your PC, you should connect and synchronize your Pocket PC because that is when the WinWAP browser is uploaded from your PC onto your Pocket PC.

Frequently Asked Questions - WinWAP for Pocket PC

  1. Can I save files with WinWAP?
No. The Pocket PC version does not allow you to save files.

  2. Why does WinWAP not work over our LAN (local area network) in HTTP mode?
Your administrator may have disabled direct HTTP connections to the internet. Usually in these situations a HTTP Proxy is available. Ask your administrator for the address and port to the HTTP proxy. The proxy can be defined in the EDIT -> OPTIONS, HTTP Tab.

  3. On what Pocket PC system does WinWAP work?
WinWAP works on Windows Mobile 2000, 2002, 2003 and 5.0 operating systems.

  4. Does WinWAP work over the ActiveSync connection?
    Yes.

  5. How do I switch between HTTP and Gateway modes?
Go to the menu EDIT -> OPTIONS and select the General Tab. In that tab you can select the connection mode.

  6. What is the difference between HTTP and WAP Gateway modes?
HTTP is the same protocol that is used with your normal web browser to open pages on the internet. In Gateway mode all data passes through the gateway that in fact compresses the data so that it loads faster over a slow connection. If your own connection to the internet is as fast as the gateways connection to the internet, it is in fact faster to use HTTP mode since you then retrieve the data directly from the URL instead of having the data pass the gateway and be processed in the gateway. Typically you would always want to use a WAP gateway over slow connections (GPRS over GSM or other slow dial-up connection) to speed up page loading.

  7. Where do I get an address for a WAP Gateway?
If you are using a GPRS or DATA connection your operator will supply you with the WAP Gateway address. There are also a number of gateways on the internet that can be used. WinWAP has a few of these gateways predefined in the gateway list.

  8. How do I erase any traces of my surfing?
Turn off all cache parameters and before you are trough clear all the saved history and bookmark lists.
