How to use controls?

Control icons
The majority of the timer controls are actually iconic. Each control as shown in figure 1 are somewhat self-explanatory and provide different functions related to the length of time a stylus is held to the icon.

The following sections will discuss each icon by example, and how the icon is used in the timer.

Timer Screen
On initial startup, a rather "blank looking" screen is provided. If any timer files are saved in the system the file dialog is provided first. A "new timer" screen as shown in figure 2 does not show any timer buttons on screen. The top section is for timer settings while the bottom section is an "array view" for display of timer buttons. Using the stylus, select the "new timer" icon under the "1" digit. This will open a new timer in that slot as shown in figure 3. Note the "cut timer" icon is now present next to the new timer button. Select this "cut timer" to remove the timer button. The information is actually held in the clipboard, so press the "paste timer" icon and the timer button will appear in the first empty slot. The timer settings are contained in the clipboard as text, so the timer settings can be shown in other applications.

Timer Settings
Now select the timer button with the stylus. Note that it changes to a red color in the selected state. Hold the stylus on the timer button for a longer period of time. The button will "disappear" and a larger button will appear in the top area of the display, as shown in figure 4. Along with the larger button display are many other items, used to change the timer settings.

Audible Alarm
The audible alarm settings are located on the right of the large timer button. The smaller round buttons allow stop/play actions to test the audible alarm. The larger speaker button will change to "muted" mode when selected. This timer depends fairly heavily on the audible alert for users, so keep watch on the timer for completion if the audio is meant to remain muted. Hold the stylus on the large speaker button to select the type of alarm sound to play. This includes the possibility of playing *.wav and *.wma files. In order to play *.wma files for alarm sounds, Microsoft Windows Media Player 7 must be installed on the PocketPC system.

Timer Duration
Underneath the large timer button is the time duration setting and how to react when the timer reaches completion. The digits in this display may be changed with keys or the virtual keyboard. Additionally the digits can be chosen through menus. For example hold the stylus down on the center two digits (minutes) until the menu appears shown in figure 5. Choose the "00" in this menu (tens menu) to move to the next (ones menu) in figure 6. Choose "01" and the new timer duration will now be 1 min 30 sec. The "down arrow" to the right indicates a timer counting down. Hold the stylus down on this arrow to view a menu for counting up or down. Or simply select the arrow to switch between counting up or down.

Timer Completion
On the right of the timer duration setting is the option for additional timer activation following completion of the current timer. The 'X' icon means no further timer activation. A 'down arrow' icon here means to start the next timer. If the current timer is the last available timer or if the next timer is already running this option will have no effect. A 'loop arrow' in this spot means restart the current timer.
