dotPocket lite 1.0 - User Guide and FAQ
Screenshots - More Details
The dotPocket product consists of two components:
- Display device drivers that provide high-performance and high-resolution video output, and allow viewing and interaction with your Pocket PC in portrait and landscape, and low- and high-resolution modes.
- Remote control application that allows for sending video output from your Pocket PC to a desktop monitor, as well as the ability to utilize your desktop keyboard and mouse to interact with the device.
Note that although the application has its own set of custom device drivers, it still works with the display device drivers currently installed on your Pocket PC.
Connection and Screen Capturing Options
Please follow the steps below to start the dotPocket:
1. Run the Desktop part of the dotPocket application (it was copied to your desktop computer during the installation process).
2. Either select Menu > File > Properties, or click the "Properties" button on the program toolbar.
Adjust the following settings to set up the proper connection between your handheld and desktop computers:
- "Choose Connection Method":
Specify the communication method that will be used to set the connection between your desktop/laptop computer and your handheld computer. RAPI (ActiveSync) is the default method; however, you can also use a TCP/IP connection. If you select TCP/IP, you will need to enter the handheld computer's name or IP address.
- "Grab Method":
Specify the screen capturing method that will be used on your handheld computer. The "Driver Integrated" (default) method uses screen capturing algorithms based on the direct access to Windows graphical interface, either via the dotPocket display drivers or Windows GDI.
The "Direct Video Memory Access" method requires the dotPocket to capture images on your handheld computer by the direct access to its video memory and by-passing the Windows OS.
- "Send timeout":
Specify your preferred delay (in milliseconds) between sendings of video frames/changes from your handheld computer to your desktop/laptop computer.
- "Optimize for slow speed connection":
This method requires the dotPocket to use the data compression algorithm with a higher compression ratio.
Note: Although this method transmits less data through the network, the efficiency of the operation may not improve due to the higher percentage of CPU utilization on your handheld computer required for the higher data compression ratio.
- "Encrypted connection":
This method encrypts the traffic between various components of the dotPocket application installed on your handheld computer and your desktop/laptop computer.
- "Start dotPocket and connect to Pocket PC when ActiveSync connects":
If selected, ActiveSync will automatically launch the dotPocket Desktop application whenever ActiveSync establishes a connection with your Pocket PC device. Also, if this option is selected, and connection is lost, then the application window will be automatically closed.
3. After you have specified the connection settings, connect your desktop computer to your Pocket PC by either selecting Menu > File > Connect , or clicking the "Connect" button on the program toolbar.
4. Once the dotPocket is connected, several menu items will become available on the File menu, including "Disconnect", "Save (Static) Screen to Disk", "Start AVI Recording" and "File Transfer". The View menu will also contain a number of available items (their specific functionality is reviewed in further topics).
Printing the Pocket PC Screen Image
- On the File menu select Print.
- Choose the necessary printer, specify print range and the number of copies.
- Scaling factor: It is a parameter for enlarging the image bitmap when printing. It specifies the coefficient for enlarging the Pocket PC screen image when printing. This parameter depends on screen resolution.
- Click OK to start printing.
