Frequently Asked Questions - iPodSync

  1. I receive a message saying "Unable to locate an iPod. Please attach your iPod and try again." , even though iTunes does recognize that an iPod is attached.
iPodSync accesses the iPod as a hard drive.
If you are using iTunes, make sure you have turned on "Enable disk Mode" in the iPod settings.

  2. After syncing, I have duplicates contacts or calendars on my iPod.
This is caused by more than one program syncing contact or calendar information to the iPod. The most common scenario is iTunes and iPodSync. To stop iTunes from syncing do the following:
    1. Open iTunes.
    2. Connect your iPod and wait for it to appear in the iTunes Source list.
    3. On the Edit menu, click Preferences.
    4. Click the iPod tab.
    5. Click the Contacts tab under the iPod tab.
    6. Un-select the "Synchronize contacts from" checkbox.
Before syncing again, press the Reset button in the Advanced options in iPodSync.

  3. When I start a sync, Outlook keep displaying a message saying something is trying to access my data and I have to select Yes each time. Is there any way to get rid of this message box?
There is no option in Outlook to turn this message off, but there is a utility that will automatically select yes for you called Express ClickYes.

  4. My iPod constantly resets itself after syncing
This is caused when characters that the iPod does not like are exported to it from Outlook. iPodSync contains filters to try and catch these characters, but there may still be offending characters that have not been identified.

To stop the iPod from resetting,
    1. Connect your iPod to your computer.
    2. When the Apple icon appears on the display, immediately press and hold the Previous and Next buttons until the "Do not disconnect" screen or FireWire icon appears.
    3. Start iPodSync and press the Reset button in the Advanced options.
This will remove any files that have been placed on your iPod by iPodSync.

If you would like to help identify and remove these offending characters, please send me the files from your iPod¡¯s Contacts and Calendars folders before performing the reset operation above. I will examine the files and attempt to identify the offending characters and add them to iPodSync¡¯s filters. eMail files to support@ipod-sync.com

  5. How can I change the contact display and sort settings
    Sort order

The sort order affects how the list of contacts is sorted in the Contacts list. You can choose between two settings for names:
    First Last Last, First
    1. Follow these steps to change the Sort order setting for iPod's contacts:
    2. Select Settings from the main menu.
    3. Select Contacts from the Settings menu.
    4. Select Sort from the Contacts menu. Press the Select button to toggle between the two settings.
    Display order

The Display order setting affects how the list of contacts is viewed. You can choose between two settings for names:
    First Last Last, First

Follow these steps to change the Display order setting for iPod's contacts:
    1. Select Settings from the main menu.
    2. Select Contacts from the Settings menu.
    3. Select Display from the Contacts menu.
    4. Press the Select button to toggle between the two settings.

  6. When trying to sync with iPodSync, I am receiving the following error: "One or more items in the folder you synchronized do not match. To resolve".
This error may be caused by items in Outlook that have conflicting edits. You can locate and resolve these conflicts by:
    1. Open the folder list view in Outlook by clicking on "View/Folder List". For a folder list view sample click here.
    2. Highlight one of the folders (Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, or Notes) where you suspect the problem exists, and change its view to ¡®By Category'. To do this click on "View/Current View/By Category".
    3. Sort the records ¡®By icon¡¯. To do this, click the folded page icon in the title bar above the category heading.)
    4. Click on the "+" sign next to the "Category" heading and scroll down until you find one or more items with a crossed swords icon. Click here to see a picture of a "crossed sword" icon.
    5. Double-click on the item with crossed-swords and from the "Conflict Resolution" window select to keep the item with the most recent date.
    6. Synchronize.
To help prevent this problem from recurring, synchronize "all folders" with your Exchange Server on a regular basis. To do this, in Outlook click on "Tools/Synchronize/All Folders". Also make sure the setting "When online synchronize all folders upon exiting" is checked by going to "Tools/Options", "Mail Services" tab and look under the "Enable offline access" option for this setting.

  7. Can I update my Outlook from my iPod using iPodSync
iPodSync provides a uni-directional sync. That is, iPodSync will keep the contents of your iPod in sync with what you have in Outlook, but it will not update Outlook with the contents of the iPod.

  8. My calendar is not syncing
    • Ensure that Synchronize Calendar is selected in the Calendar options.
    • Check the Contents in the Calendar options to ensure that if a date range is specified, the range is valid.
    • Ensure that your Calendar folder(s) are selected in the Outlook Folders in the Advanced Outlook options.
    • Check to see if Category Filtering is turned on in the in the Advanced Outlook options.
